Approximately 1.3 million Indian soldiers served in World War One, and over 74,000 of them lost their lives. But history has mostly forgotten these sacrifices, which were rewarded with broken promises of Indian independence from the British government

It's 100 years since the armistice of 11 November 1918 ended what was once called "the war to end all wars". But there are still many Untold stories about the Indian Army from the conflict - personal accounts that show how global the war was, and how extraordinary Indian experiences were.

Yet people today try to dismiss them as mere mercenaries. They don’t see the basic flaw in their argument— mercenaries don’t fight with political sanction of a whole country, and mercenaries don’t win gallantry awards as prestigious as the Victoria Cross. Of course, it was the Indian soldier who took the fall when the expected political returns didn’t come India’s way. The odds he faced, the sacrifices he made were all forgotten by the people who sent him; but the people whose lives he touched on foreign soil remembered him.

Even today, the Indian soldier of the two world wars is fondly remembered by the British, the French, the Belgians and Italians. There are memorials across the world erected in his honour, but back home we don’t even bother to care about the memorials that the British put up for him. Worse, we justify it by saying that a traitor needs no memorial.

If the Indian soldier, by following the orders of the government of the day, was being a traitor to his people, then everyone who moved the British Empire’s machinery in India was a traitor. That would include teachers in government-run schools and colleges, doctors and nurses, archaeologists, civil servants, policemen—the list will be long. Yet we talk about the first Indian in ICS, the Indian
Archaeologies who discovered Mohenjodaro, etc, with great pride, don’t we? Then why is it a shame to talk about the first Indian to win a Victoria Cross?
