Why is Cyprus still divided?

Into Europe: Cyprus is a divided island. To the south is the ethnically Greek Republic of Cyprus, and to the North, the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. With a bitter history involving Greek and Turkish Nationalism, the island has been divided for nearly 60 years. And despite efforts at reconciliation, the island is still divided and the discovery of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean has complicated issues.
