When C Squadron of the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards attacked some German lancers outside the Belgian town of Mons on the 22nd August 1914 they set some WW1 milestones:

The first military action by the British Army in the war
The first man to kill a German
The first British soldier to fire upon the enemy.

But 10 days before hand, in Africa another soldier serving the British Army had fired upon German forces.

And on the very day of the Irish Dragoon Guard’s cavalry charge in Europe, the very first British officer was killed in action…once again, 4000 miles away in Africa.

The Togoland Campaign of 1914 is a long-lost footnote to Britain’s story in the Great War, but it too provided some notable hallmarks and Britain’s first victory over the Germans as well.

Sit back and enjoy yet another riveting tale from The History Chap.

My name is Chris Green ("The History Chap") and I am on a mission to share the amazing history of Britain so that we can appreciate where we have come from and why we are here.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
