The beginning of World War 2 - German Invasion of Poland (rare pictures) 1939

Published
83 years ago, on September 1, 1939, World War II began with the invasion of Poland by the German Wehrmacht. Almost 60 million people lost their lives during the six-year war.
It was to burden German-Polish relations for many decades to come. Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler passed off the attack on Poland as a defensive action. Allegedly, Polish soldiers had attacked the radio station in Gliwice. In fact, the SS (Schutzstaffel) had staged the incident. France and Britain demanded the withdrawal of German soldiers from Poland within two days. Hitler let the ultimatum pass. The German "Blitzkrieg" brought Poland to its knees within four weeks. It was the beginning of a much larger, barbaric war that would soon take hold of large parts of the world and bring unimaginable suffering to the people.
