Rare Historical Photos Vol. 32 | Spectacular Alpine Shelter WWI

Published
► Hello guys and welcome back to another episode with Rare Historical Photos, taking us on a photographic journey into the past.

Photos of the day:
► Susanna Salter was an American politician and activist most recognised for being the country's first female mayor. On April 4, 1887, Salter was elected mayor of Argonia. But, she never ran for office in the first place. When she found out her name was on the ballot, she was hanging up her washing. Susanna Salter's name was put on the ballot by a group of men opposed to women's suffrage in order to humiliate her and the causes she supported. Well, guess who got the last laugh in the end! She won by a large margin, becoming the first female mayor and the first woman to hold any political office in the United States.
► This spectacular World War I shelter is located roughly 8,800 feet above sea level in the Monte Cristallo massif, which is part of the Italian Dolomites, and can only be reached by adventurous hikers and climbers. The shelter is thought to have been built by Italian forces fighting the Austro-Hungarians in the high-altitude Alpine sector of the Italian front during the so-called "White War." It's unclear how the refuge was built, but the troops were known to use rope ladders and cableways to mount the rockfaces.
► This is a touching picture of a 16 year old German soldier, Hans-Georg Henke, crying as he is captured by the US 9th Army, in Germany on April 3rd, 1945. Henke burst into tears as his world crumbled around him. He lost both parents during the war leaving the family destitute. To support the family, he joined the Luftwaffe at only 15 years of age, as a Hitler Youth soldier. After World War II, he went on to live a full life in East Germany and died in 1997.
