Despite being one of the most powerful and militarily successful nations in history, France has a reputation of surrendering, largely due to its quick fall to to the Nazis. The main reason for their quick fall was lack of preparation and outdated tactics. Many in France believed World War One truly was the war to end all wars and so the military did not update it's tactics or units and instead France bet on a series of fortifications known as the Maginot line to defend France from future attacks. However, the Germans used a rapid form of warfare known as blitzkrieg and simply went round the Maginot line by invading Belgium. Using superior tanks and a larger airforce, the Germans outflanked the French military, defeating them in just over 6 weeks. However, the French army was not useless, it was simply outdated and not designed to defend against such aggressive tactics.
