The Doolittle Raid, also known as the Tokyo after Japan attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tasked US Military to carry out strike on Japan to boost the morale of American. The raid was planned by, led by, and named after Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle. 16 B-25B Mitchell medium bombers, each with a crew of five, 80 airmen were launched from the US Navy aircraft USS Hornet carrier. the US planes bombed Japanese military or industrial targets in Tokyo. The raid killed about 50 people in Japan, including civilians, and injured 400. 69 airman were rescued by Chinese civilians and soldiers. one American airmen killed during bail out. 8 crewmen were captured by Japanese. 3 American crewmen were executed by firing squad for war crimes and murdering Japanese citizens by Japanese court. one American crewmen died in captivity. 4 crewmen were prisoners of war until the end of the war. after the war, 4 Japanese officers were tried for war crimes of Doolittle raid. they were found guilty and sentenced to hard labor 3 for 5 years and 1 for 9 years. James Doolittle received medal of honor and promotion.
