We visited the grave of Nicola Marschall, "the Artist of the Confederacy" who designed the "Stars & Bars" the flag of the Confederate States of America. He also designed the gray uniforms of the troops for the South. Marschall was an accomplished artist who was born in Germany, before moving to Alabama before joining the Civil War. During reconstruction, Marschall had a hard time finding work as an artist, so he eventually moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and found success as a portrait painter. He painted portraits of both Civil War Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, as well as both commanders, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, and even Napoleon Bonaparte. He is buried in the famous, Cave Hill Cemetery, in Louisville, Kentucky.
