Speaker Biography: Simon Hiscock is Director of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum and Professor of Botany in the Department of Plant Sciences – posts he has held since 2015. Previously he was Director of the University of Bristol Botanic Garden where he lead the creation on the newest university botanic garden in the UK. Now, at the UK’s oldest botanic garden, he and his team are embarking on the large capital development programmes at both the Garden and Arboretum. His research seeks to understand fundamental processes in plant reproduction and evolution using genetics, genomics and field experiments. Ongoing research is exploring the interactions between genotype/gene expression, phenotypic plasticity, and environment on the evolution of ragworts (Senecio), including the eponymous Oxford ragwort.
