शम्सुद्दीन इल्तुतमिश दिल्ली सल्तनत में शम्सी वंंश का एक प्रमुख शासक था। तुर्की-राज्य संस्थापक कुतुब-उद-दीन ऐबक के बाद वो उन शासकों में से था जिससे दिल्ली सल्तनत की नींव मजबूत हुई। वह ऐबक का दामाद भी था। उसने 1211 इस्वी से 1236 इस्वी तक शासन किया। राज्याभिषेक समय से ही अनेक तुर्क अमीर उसका विरोध कर रहे थे। खोखरों के विरुद्ध इल्तुतमिश की कार्य कुशलता से प्रभावित होकर मुहम्मद ग़ोरी ने उसे "अमीरूल उमरा" नामक महत्त्वपूर्ण पद दिया था। अकस्मात् मुत्यु के कारण कुतुबद्दीन ऐबक अपने किसी उत्तराधिकारी का चुनाव नहीं कर सका था। अतः लाहौर के तुर्क अधिकारियों ने कुतुबद्दीन ऐबक के विवादित पुत्र आरामशाह (जिसे इतिहासकार नहीं मानते) को लाहौर की गद्दी पर बैठाया, परन्तु दिल्ली के तुर्को सरदारों एवं नागरिकों के विरोध के फलस्वरूप कुतुबद्दीन ऐबक के दामाद इल्तुतमिश, जो उस समय बदायूँ का सूबेदार था, को दिल्ली आमंत्रित कर राज्यसिंहासन पर बैठाया गया।

Shamsuddin Iltutmish was a prominent ruler of the Shamsi dynasty in the Delhi Sultanate. He was one of the rulers after the Turkish-state founder Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who strengthened the foundation of the Delhi Sultanate. He was also the son-in-law of Aibak. He ruled from 1211 AD to 1236 AD. Many Turk nobles were opposing him from the time of his coronation. Impressed by the efficiency of Iltutmish against the Khokhars, Muhammad Ghori gave him an important post named "Amirul Umra". Due to his sudden death, Qutbuddin Aibak could not choose any of his successors. Therefore, the Turkic officials of Lahore put Qutbuddin Aibak's disputed son Aramshah (whom historians do not believe) on the throne of Lahore, but as a result of the opposition of the Turko chieftains and citizens of Delhi, Iltutmish, the son-in-law of Qutubuddin Aibak, who was the Subedar of Budaun at that time, was invited to Delhi and seated on the throne.
