31. The redivision of Post-war Europe #1812 #napoleon

Published
Napoleon unwittingly averted one European war: a war between his enemies.
At the Congress of Vienna, they were deciding the fate of the continent, each had their own future in mind.
England feared the rise of Russia, which was gaining a large part of Poland, its bridgehead in Europe, and Emperor Alexander was becoming the arbiter of the great powers.
Austria did not want the strengthening of Prussia, which received the lands of Saxony. Both countries disputed leadership among the German states.
And France wanted to regain its status as a great power.
The secret anti-Russian treaty had already been written. Bonaparte, fleeing from Elba to Paris, had sent it to Alexander. But Alexander acted unexpectedly. He burned the paper in front of the allies.
Napoleon was defeated.
The Congress of Vienna enshrined the principle of the primacy of the interests of the five leading powers.
A pentarchy was established, which for almost a century and a half would decide the fate of the world.
But the contradictions between the countries were not resolved, leading to new wars.
