10. How Napoleon wanted to capture London, but instead imposed sanctions #1812 #napoleon #Trafalgar

Published
Napoleon fought sanctions wars with England after the failure of the attempt to land there.
“I need three foggy days, and I will be the Lord of London,” he dreamed, gathering an army at the English Channel.
England was the key rival of France. It ruled the sea and financed anti-French alliances – coalitions.
On land, Napoleon knew no defeat.
However, his hopes of landing attack were dashed: Nelson destroyed the French fleet at Trafalgar.
France haв only one weapon left at its disposal – sanctions.
Countries had previously resorted to economic blockades in their struggle with one another.
Napoleon imposed a continental blockade based on the countries he conquered.
But the economies of both sides suffered losses from it.
Faced with a growing crisis, Russia refused to support the blockade.
To force Russia to fulfill the conditions, Napoleon started the Russian campaign hoping it would help him defeat England. Ironically, this was the beginning of his own defeat.
